National Governors Association GranT

In 2006, Massachusetts was one of ten states to receive a National Governors Association grant. The $2 million, two-year grant aimed to increase high school graduation and college and career readiness rates. Massachusetts’ grant included three key goals:

  • strengthen the value of the high school diploma for all students;
  • close the achievement gap; and
  • use data to hold ourselves accountable.

Several initiatives to address these goals are currently underway by the Board of Higher Education and Department of Education, including:

  • aligning high school standards with college expectations;
  • creating a recommended core curriculum for all high school students.
  • developing an optional Algebra II assessment;
  • restoring the state’s dual enrollment program, with a focus on math and science;
  • creating a career and education planning communications strategy to assist students in education and career planning; and
  • building a data management infrastructure (School-to-College Database) to link PreK-12 data with higher education data to better track student performance.
