Choosing A Retirement Plan

Employees who are eligible for ORP coverage must select the retirement plan under which their benefits will accrue: the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) or the State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS). The following sections are intended to help employees understand both plans’ features; bolstering their ability to make a good choice.

Please note: As of March 10, 2008, the office of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education
was renamed the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. The name change will be integrated into
prior existing website content gradually over the next few months.
